Honouring the Father of Telemark Skiing in Morgedal
On Saturday, June 14, 2025, Morgedal, Norway, celebrated the 200th anniversary of Sondre Norheim, born on June 10, 1825, at Øverbø farm. Known as the father of modern skiing, Norheim’s innovations continue to shape Norway’s ski culture and national identity.
Book Signing and Lecture by Thor Gotaas
The day began at the Norwegian Ski Museum. Ski historian and author Thor Gotaas signed copies of his new biography, Sondre Norheim – Crofter and Skier. Afterwards, he delivered a lecture on Norheim’s life, covering his craftsmanship and daring skiing techniques.
A Legend Revisited
Norheim’s contributions include innovations in ski binding design and carving ski technology. Moreover, his techniques laid the foundation for modern skiing practices worldwide.
Special Postage Stamp Unveiling
A highlight of the day was the unveiling of a bicentennial postage stamp. Halvor Fasting, Stamp Director of Norway’s Postal Service, presented the stamp as a national tribute to Norheim.
Launch of Ski Simulator at Norwegian Ski Adventure
County Mayor Svein Tore Løkslid officially opened a state-of-the-art ski simulator. Athletes from the Telemark national team and the Norwegian Ski Federation tested the simulator. It accommodates skiers, snowboarders, and even seated users.
Cultural Program: Play, Music, and Legacy
The cultural program featured Bakkane Kallar (The Hills Are Calling) by Hæge Manheim. The play told Norheim’s story through the eyes of his wife, Rannei. Symre Bang provided live music, creating an immersive experience for the audience.
Jubilee Dinner at Morgedal Hotel
The day ended with a jubilee dinner attended by over 100 guests. Local Telemark cuisine and drinks were served. Bjørn Espen Aase, Sports Manager for Telemark skiing, paid tribute to Norheim, while Tarjei Gjelstad skillfully hosted the evening.
Historical Legacy: Ski Culture and National Identity
The celebration highlighted Norheim’s impact on Norway’s nation-building before 1905. Morgedal, known as “the cradle of skiing,” also produced Olav Bjaaland, who joined Roald Amundsen’s South Pole expedition, and the Hemmestveit brothers, founders of the world’s first ski school in Christiania (Oslo).
A Fitting Tribute to Sondre Norheim
The event honored a man whose ski design innovations and playful techniques transformed Norway’s winter traditions into a national symbol. The celebration combined history, performance, and community, creating a memorable homage to skiing’s greatest pioneer.
