In the enchanting world of snow sports, few things are as heartwarming as the sight of children discovering the joys of skiing. FIS Telemark, in its innovative stride, has launched the FIS SnowKidz initiative. This program is a cornerstone of the broader ‘Bring Children to the Snow’ campaign, serving as a dynamic platform for organizers worldwide to introduce the younger generation to the exhilarating world of snow and, specifically, Telemark skiing.
The Essence of FIS TeleKidz
During this Telemark World Cup season, alongside various FIS and national races, the FIS TeleKidz series is making waves. Far from being just a competitive event, TeleKidz is a celebration of the Telemark spirit, tailored for the young. This initiative goes beyond racing; it’s about immersing children in the culture of Telemark skiing – a culture rich in passion, sportsmanship, enjoyment, and a distinctive way of life.
Breaking Barriers in Telemark Skiing
Great Britain’s Telemark Coach, Sébastien Mansart, highlights the importance of engaging young skiers. “TeleKidz offers a much-needed portal for kids to engage with Telemark skiing, especially given the current shortage of child-specific gear,” he states. The program aims to provide equipment during key events like FIS races and World Cups. The format is straightforward yet captivating – starting with basic training in the morning followed by a friendly competition in the afternoon. This structure not only introduces Telemark skiing in an entertaining manner but also scouts for budding talent, guiding them towards clubs and teams.
A Playground for Developing Skills and Friendships
TeleKidz is more than skill-building; it’s about creating a community. Children partaking in these events have the chance to learn jumping, freeheel skiing, and skating, while also honing their balance and overall skiing techniques. But perhaps more importantly, they get to meet peers with similar interests, forging friendships and a shared love for Telemark skiing.
Expanding Telemark’s Reach to the Young
Christoph Wenger, the President of the LOC Swiss Telemark Championships 2023, shared his enthusiasm for the initiative. “Through various initiatives, including annual programs and clinics with local alpine clubs, the Mouch’Paba Telemark Club (Thyon) actively introduces children to a new dimension of snow sports. TeleKidz is a pivotal part of this mission, widening Telemark skiing’s appeal and emphasizing its diverse skill set,” he remarks.
