Trym Nygaard Løken Says Goodbye to Racing
Norway’s telemark skiing legend, Trym Nygaard Løken, also known as the Viking of Telemark, has officially announced his retirement. For the telemark community, this is a bittersweet moment — a mix of admiration, gratitude, and sadness. We say goodbye to one of the most decorated athletes in modern telemark skiing.
A Journey That Inspired a Generation
Løken began skiing at a young age in Bækkelagets Sportsklub, starting with cross-country and biathlon. Later, he discovered telemark skiing, which became his true passion. Over 15 years on the World Cup stage, including 11 seasons with the Norwegian National Telemark Team, he achieved extraordinary results.
Throughout his career, Løken earned:
- 8 World Championship gold medals (12 total medals)
- 7 crystal globes, including 2 overall titles
- 35 World Cup victories
- 84 podium finishes
- 186 World Cup starts
These achievements tell only part of the story. Moreover, his career was defined by resilience, humility, and the joy he brought to every race.
Highs, Lows, and Lifelong Lessons
In his farewell message, Trym reflected on the ups and downs of professional sport. He said:
“There were definitely more ups than downs, but the setbacks taught me a lot about myself and life. I’ll carry that with me forever.”
He thanked teammates, coaches, sponsors, family, friends, and athletes from other sports who helped create a world-class training environment.
Ending on a High Note
Remarkably, Løken retires after what he calls his best season yet — healthy and injury-free. He explained that this decision allows him to explore life beyond professional competition.
“Ending my career after my best season, without injuries and with my body ready for fun in the years to come, feels very good.”
Gratitude from the Telemark Community
On behalf of everyone at telemark-skiing.info and telemark fans worldwide, we thank Trym for every thrilling race and every smile he brought to the slopes. His dedication has inspired countless young skiers to follow their dreams.
We wish him health, happiness, and an exciting new chapter in life. We’ll be cheering from the sidelines, knowing he will still be on the hill, skis on, spirit free.
Thank you, Trym.
