A Journey through Tirza’s Skiing Heritage
On February 10 and 11, the Tirza Ski Museum hosted its ninth annual celebration of skiing traditions, featuring the “Tirza Ancient Skiing” and the exhilarating “Tirza Crazy Telemark.” This event offered participants a unique blend of historical appreciation and adventurous skiing, starting with a scenic ski hike from the museum itself.

A Skiing Adventure through Time
A Day of Discovery: Ski Hike and Cultural Exploration in Tirza
.On the first day, there was a ski hike through the meadows, hills and forests of Tirza. Skiing started at the Tirza Ski Museum. On the skiing route, the skiers visited an ancient place of pagan offerings – St. John’s stone (an archeological monument), where an improvised display of costumes and equipment was also held. A little later, the participants rested in the nearby old farmhouse Mežruži, where they enjoyed local culinary delicacies and Italian limoncello made by the hostess. After that, the participants continued skiing and returned to the starting point – at the Ski Museum. After skiing, the participants enjoyed a delicious lunch in the local school hall. After lunch, the musical part began, where the musical association “Kandahar” performed, whose musicians are also members of skiing. The event lasted until late in the evening, in which the participants sang and danced.
Crazy Telemark Day
On the second day, the “Tirza Crazy Telemark” took place on the local slopes. There were trips through the powder, in some places deeper, and in some places shallower (where the snow had been blown away by the wind and melted by the previous thaw). Descents took place only with wooden skis and leather boots. These are the rules of the event. Modern style clothing and equipment is strictly prohibited! A table and chairs were set up on the top of the hill where locally produced cider was tasted. After the great skiing, the participants enjoyed a brunch at the Tirza tea house “Laiks” and took pictures as a souvenir of the event against the background of a special old photo salon in old ski clothes and with old skis. Skiing proved once again that the joy of skiing does not lie in well-prepared tracks or high mountains, but in the love of skiing and a good mood
